New Driving Test Booking Rules (UK) – What’s Changed?
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has introduced major changes to driving test bookings between 2025 and 2026. These changes are designed to reduce waiting times, stop third-party reselling, and make the system fairer for learners.
Here’s exactly what’s changed—and when.
- April 2025 – Cancellation Rule Change
From 8 April 2025:
- You must give 10 full working days’ notice to change or cancel your driving test
- Previously, only 3 working days’ notice was required
- If you don’t give enough notice, you lose your test fee
This change was introduced to reduce last-minute cancellations and wasted test slots.
- March 2026 – Limit on Test Changes
From 31 March 2026:
- You can only make 2 changes to your driving test booking
- After that, you must cancel and rebook a new test
Previously, learners could change their test up to 6 times—this has now been significantly reduced.
- May 2026 – You Must Book & Manage Your Own Test
From 12 May 2026:
- Only the learner driver can book, change, or cancel their test
- Driving instructors and course providers cannot do this for you
- It becomes illegal for anyone else to manage your booking
This is one of the biggest changes and is aimed at stopping bots and companies from bulk-booking and reselling test slots.
- June 2026 – Restricted Test Centre Changes
From 9 June 2026:
- You can only move your test to:
- Your original test centre, or
- One of the 3 nearest test centres
This limits people booking tests far away just to get earlier dates.
What These Changes Mean for You
These changes are designed to make the system fairer—but they also mean:
- You need to book your own test
- You have fewer chances to make changes
- Planning ahead is more important than ever
The key takeaway: Get a test booked as soon as possible—then improve it.
