Intensive Driving Courses In Derby

(and surrounding areas)

If you’re looking to pass your driving test quickly, then our intensive driving courses in Derby are the ideal solution. Unlike traditional weekly lessons, these courses are designed to help you progress faster by learning over a shorter period of time.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or have already had some driving experience, we offer courses tailored to your individual needs. As a result, you can learn at a pace that suits you while still working towards a fast test date.

Learn Faster with Structured Intensive Lessons

Our intensive driving courses allow you to build skills quickly because you’ll be driving more frequently. In addition, this consistent practice helps you retain what you learn and gain confidence behind the wheel.

For example, instead of relearning skills each week, you continue improving day after day. Therefore, many learners find this method more efficient and effective.

We provide a wide range of courses to suit every learner. For instance:

  • Beginners with little or no experience
  • Learners who are close to test standard
  • Drivers who have previously failed a test

No matter your starting point, we will match you with the right course. As a result, you receive the support needed to reach test standard quickly.

Manual and Automatic Options Available

To make learning as convenient as possible, we offer both manual and automatic intensive driving courses. This means that you can choose the option that best suits your preference and confidence level.

What happens when I book?

Once we’ve established we have a Driving Instructor who can deliver your Intensive Driving Course when you want it, the following things will happen-

  • We’ll ask you for a deposit to secure your Intensive Driving Course. This will include the Practical driving test fee (unless you already have one booked). You can check the deposit payments for each Intensive Driving Course by clicking here.
  • We’ll then book you into our diary and notify your Driving Instructor. They will then contact you to introduce themselves and answer any questions you may have. They will also confirm details of how to pay the balance of your course.
  • We will then utilise our fast track Driving test booking system to book a driving test to coincide with the end of your Intensive Driving Course. On the rare occasions where we cannot find a driving test for the last day of your course, we will book it as close as we can to the end of your Intensive Driving Course. Your Driving Instructor will then retain a few hours from your course to take you for your Driving test.

Why Choose an Intensive Driving Course?

There are several benefits to choosing an intensive course. Firstly, you can significantly reduce the time it takes to pass your test. Secondly, you gain more consistent practice, which helps improve your driving skills faster.

Driving in Derby: Key Roads, Test Routes and Local Areas

Driving in Derby offers a varied and practical experience for learners. Whether you’re preparing for your test or building confidence on the road, the city provides a mix of busy routes, residential streets, and faster dual carriageways.

One of the main routes you’ll encounter is the A52, which runs through Derby and connects the city to Nottingham and beyond. Similarly, the A50 is another important road, often used for higher-speed driving and linking Derby to surrounding areas. As a result, learners gain valuable experience adjusting to different speed limits and traffic conditions.

In addition, Derby’s ring road plays a key role in navigating the city. Because it connects many major routes, it’s commonly used during lessons and test routes. Therefore, becoming familiar with roundabouts, lane positioning, and signage here is essential.

Driving test routes in Derby typically include a variety of local areas to ensure learners are well-prepared. For example, you may drive through Alvaston, where you’ll encounter residential streets and junctions. Likewise, Spondon offers a mix of quieter roads and more complex layouts.

Meanwhile, areas such as Chaddesden and Allenton are often included because they provide experience with busier traffic and roundabouts. In contrast, Chellaston allows learners to practise in slightly less congested environments while still dealing with real-world driving situations.

Overall, learning to drive in Derby helps you develop a wide range of skills. From navigating major roads like the A52 and A50 to handling local test routes through areas such as Alvaston and Chaddesden, you’ll be well-prepared for both your driving test and everyday driving.

Did you know that Derby isn’t the only place where 1st Intensive offers Intensive Driving Courses? We cover all of Derbyshire—take a peek below to see other areas.

What should I do to start my driving journey?

To start your driving journey, follow these steps. First, ensure you are at least 17 years old. If you haven’t already, apply for a provisional license. Follow this link to complete your application. You need to read a standard number plate from 20 meters away. To find out the exact requirements, follow this link.

Do i need to pass my theory test before booking an Intensive Driving Course?

It’s a great idea to have a valid theory test certificate since it’s needed to book your practical driving test. But don’t worry if you haven’t passed your theory test yet! We’re here to help with theory test training and can assist you in setting up your test. Once this is completed, we can then make arrangements to book your practical driving test.

Should I learn in Manual or Automatic?

Ultimately, it all depends on what works best for you and your individual preferences. If you choose to go for a manual transmission, you’ll have the ability to drive both manual and automatic cars, but keep in mind that there are additional skills you’ll need to master during the learning process. On the other hand, choosing to learn in an automatic car can be much easier to control, which makes it a fantastic option, especially for individuals who might feel nervous or intimidated about the prospect of learning to drive. The automatic vehicle allows you to focus more on the road and less on shifting gears, which can significantly reduce your stress while learning.

Which is the right Intensive Driving Course for me?

Our course descriptions give a detailed outline of what experience you should already have to be able to achieve test readiness with the amount of hours you are booking. The most important thing is to be honest, with us, and yourself! Everyone is looking for the same outcome, which is you successfully passing your driving test, and going on to be a safe and competent driver. Your Instructor will work as hard as possible to achieve this, but they cannot work miracles. There is nothing to be gained from booking too few hours and hoping for the best! You can find comprehensive details of what skills you need to pass your driving test on the Ready to Pass website

How are the Intensive Driving Courses structed?

Regardless of which Intensive Driving Course you choose, each day consists of 5 hours. A short break is taken every hour, for comfort and safety. This is also an ideal time to discuss anything with your Instructor, without having to concentrate on the road! Although it might sound a long time, most Learners tend to cope well with the Intensive nature of the courses, and time goes by quickly!

Do you provide a car for me to take my Driving Test?

Regardless of which Intensive Driving Course you book, you will use your Driving Instructor’s car to take your test. This is included in your Intensive Driving Course. You may choose to use your own car if you wish. If so, you need to ensure it meets Driving Test requirements. You can find these here.

Can I take my driving test in my own car?

Yes, you can use your own car to take a driving test but it does need to meet certain requirements. You can find these here.

Am I guaranteed to pass my test?

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a “guaranteed pass”! Anybody claiming otherwise, is not being at all transparent with you! Driving tests are conducted by the Driver & Vehicle standards Agency. They will assess you driving, and if it meets the required standards, you will pass. This is why it is so important to make sure you book enough time to prepare properly. The guarantee we can give you, is that your Instructor will work as hard as they possibly can to help you achieve the result you want.

Should I practice in my own car?

If you’re lucky enough to have access to a car you can practice in, then absolutely yes! There is some great information about practicing privately on the “Ready to Pass” website. You can find more information here.

Do you get a test at the end of your Intensive Driving Course?

We always aim to secure a driving test for the last day of your Intensive Driving Course. This is achieved by constantly checking for late cancellations and new test dates being added. Since Covid, there has been a significant lack of driving test appointments, and we are to a large extent, at the mercy of the DVSA (Driver &Vehicle Standards Agency) who conduct driving tests. Whilst we are usually able to secure test dates when required, there are occasions where we may have to defer your test to a short time after your course has finished. In this case, you instructor will retain 2 hours from your course, so you test can be completed at a slightly later date.

What happens to I fail my Driving Test?

Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to pass their Driving Test on the first attempt. Should this happen, don’t worry! We’ll arrange a new Driving test for you, and you’ll simply book some additional hours to prepare for your next Driving Test. Your Driving Instructor will be able to advise you how many additional hours you’ll need to book to make sure you finish to job next time!

Can you help with Insurance?

Yes, we can help put you in touch with the right Insurance providers who specialise in Learner Drivers, and newly qualified drivers.
